"BRAND NEW COLONY"
>From "Give Up" by the Postal Service
Music by Benjamin Gibbard & Jimmy Tamborello
Words by Benjamin Gibbard
Chord transcription by David William (kinghaircut@superfantastique.com)

On the album, this song relies heavily on Jimmy's drum programming to move it along, and the chord changes are noted by the synthesized bass/keyboard sound... but these are the underlying chords as I heard them:

(NOTE: in the intro and the instrumental breaks, each dash represents a beat, with the chord letter representing a beat as well.  So for example: 2 measures of C is the letter C followed by seven dashes... making for 8 beats of C.)

INTRO:
(under the beepboop sounds): C-------Em---Am--- (x2)
(and when the bass notes come in): C-------Em---Am---F-------G---Em---

VERSE 1:
C                             Em                          Am
I'll be the grapes fermented, bottled and served with the table set,
      F
In my finest suit, like a perfect gentleman.
C                              Em            Am
I'll be the fire escape that's bolted to the ancient brick,
      F
Where you will sit and contemplate your day.

INSTRUMENTAL BREAK:
C-------Em---Am---F-------G---Em--- (x2)

VERSES 2 & 3:
C                            Em                    Am
I'll be the water wings that save you if you start drowning in
    F
An open tab when your judgment^Тs on the brink.
C                           Em                   Am
I'll be the phonograph that plays your favorite albums back
           F                            G
As you're lying there, drifting off to sleep...
C                             Em                  Am
I'll be the platform shoes, undo what heredity's done to you,
           F
You won't have to strain to look into my eyes...
C                         Em                           Am
I'll be your winter coat, buttoned and zipped straight to the throat,
         F
With the collar up so you won't catch cold.

BRIDGE:
Am                 F                             C
I want to take you far - from the cynics in this town
                     Am                           F
and kiss you on the mouth - we'll cut our bodies free
                         C                           Am
from the tethers of this scene - start a brand new colony
                       F                                C
where everything will change - we'll give ourselves new names
            Am                            F
identities erased - the sun will heat the ground
               C                           G
under our bare feet - in this brand new colony

              *Am---F---C---G---
brand new colony...

(*HERE IT SEGUES INTO THE SLOWER END PART.)
INSTRUMENTAL BREAK:

Am---F---C---G--- (x2)

Am    F           C            G        Am---F---C---G---
Ev-ry-thing... will change... ooo ooo... ooo ooo...          (x3)

END ON: Am
